Essential oils for period pain

As with herbal medicine, in case of painful periods we use aromatherapy in order to rebalance the hormones (if you have premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or an irregular cycle ) or as a natural remedy for period pain .

1. Pain-relieving essential oils

The tropical basil

This is the essential oil (EO) to have! Powerful antispasmodic , good analgesic , it also has anti-inflammatory properties . Tropical basil essential oil acts very quickly and reduces uterine spasms and menstrual pain . It relaxes the muscles and acts on the nervous system.

To use tropical basil essential oil :

🍃 Dilute 5 drops of tropical basil essential oil in 1 tablespoon of borage, arnica or calendula vegetable oil .

🍃 In massages on the pelvic area

🍃 Repeat the massage 2 or 3 times a day

tarragon plant

Tarragon essential oil has antispasmodic properties . It acts on the muscles, in particular the uterine muscle , and on the nervous system.

It helps fight against: painful menstruation , uterine spasms , premenstrual pain , gynecological problems .

🍃 Mix 4 drops of tarragon essential oil in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (borage, arnica or calendula)

Roman chamomile

Also called noble chamomile, Roman chamomile is calming , sedative and soothing , it is also a good antispasmodic .

You can use it against uterine spasms that cause pelvic cramps , but also if you are anxious or have trouble sleeping.

🍃 Mix 5 drops of Roman chamomile HE with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (borage, arnica or calendula)

2. Essential oils to balance hormones

To balance the hormones , we prefer essential oils that have a mimetic effect of female hormones .

clary sage

Clary sage flower

Clary sage is estrogen-like , or phytoestrogen , meaning it mimics the effects of estrogen on the female body.

Its sclareol content allows it to help regulate menstrual cycles . Use it if you have irregular periods , painful periods or PMS . It is also effective against hot flashes of pre-menopause or menopause .

🍃 Mix 5 drops of clary sage HE in 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil of arnica , borage or calendula

🍃 Apply in massages on the lower abdomen

🍃 Repeat the massage 2 to 3 times a day, as needed

❌ Clary sage is estrogen-like, especially do not use it if you have endometriosis or if you suspect you have it!

Yarrow flowers

The essential oil of yarrow is recommended in case of painful or scanty menstruation: it is anti-inflammatory , antispasmodic and it stimulates the onset of menstruation .

🍃 Mix 5 drops of yarrow HE in 1 tablespoon of calendula, arnica or borage vegetable oil .

🍃 In massages on the pelvic area

🍃 Repeat the massage 2 or 3 times a day

To find a little peace of mind during your period , you can use these essential oils in synergy . You can find recipes all over the internet but here are two that I tested (and approved!):

🌿 The antispasmodic, pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory and relaxing synergy: 2 drops of tropical basil HE + 2 drops of Roman chamomile HE + 1 drop of true lavender HE + 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil evening primrose , borage, arnica or calendula)

🌿 Antispasmodic, analgesic and relaxing synergy: 2 drops of bigarade petit grain EO + 2 drops of tarragon EO + 1 drop of true lavender EO + 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (evening primrose, borage, arnica or calendula)

You can also use this pain-relieving massage oil.

Do not take essential oils if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, asthmatic. Ask your pharmacist for advice and follow the precautions for use.

Never stop a treatment without medical advice. Aromatherapy is not an alternative medicine, plants can interact with your drug treatments and cause other health problems.
