History & traditions

The name of apatite comes from the fact that as it has very varied aspects and colors, it has long been confused with other minerals. Its chemical composition was determined at the end of the 18th century and it was in 1786 that Abraham Gottlob Werner, a German mineralogist, gave it the name of apatite , drawing inspiration from the Greek apatan which means to deceive.

Apatite is the only mineral found in crystalline form in the human body: we all have it in the enamel of our teeth.

In history, apatite was mostly used in ancient Egypt. It was used to make pearls and it was also used in cosmetics. In the Near East, it was used for cylinder seals.
