History & traditions

The name of this stone derives from the Latin lapis (stone) and lazuli (azure) which comes from the Persian ladjaward (derived from the Sanskrit raja varta , portion of king).

Excavations in Mesopotamia have shown that the use of lapis lazuli dates back at least to the end of the Obeid period (6500-3750 BC). This stone is mentioned in a legend from Mesopotamia, the Epic of Gilgamesh .

Lapis lazuli is also widely used by the Sumerian dynasties of the 2nd millennium BC. At that time, it was thought that it was able to ward off bad luck: they thus made jewelry, amulets, cylinder seals, used it in inlays.

Lapis lazuli has continued to be used to make objects and ornaments throughout the ages and around the world. The Egyptians made funerary scarabs from it, it was used in the decoration of the Taj Mahal in India, many bowls and other lapis lazuli objects dating from the 16th century have been found in Italy. Lapis lazuli also composes, with malachite , the imposing columns of Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

During Roman times, lapis lazuli was used for its supposed aphrodisiac virtues.

In the Middle Ages, it was drunk ground in milk for medicinal use: for the robustness of the limbs and to prevent fear, doubt and envy.

In addition, lapis lazuli ground into a fine powder was used in painting under the name of genuine Outremer. It was used by many artists from the 12th century and was particularly used by Italian painters, such as Giotto.
