History & traditions

According to Pliny the Elder, the name of obsidian comes from a person from ancient Rome, Obsius, who was the first to report this rock in Ethiopia. Linguists, on the other hand, believe that this name derives from the Latin obsidio , hemmed in, which corresponds to the shape of the breaks in obsidian .

During Prehistory, in the Stone Age, obsidian was used in the manufacture of sharp tools and weapons because it is a robust stone. Obsidian rolled pebbles were used for jewelry and blades were even made.

Traces of a form of trade and transport of this stone in the Neolithic have been discovered, in southern Europe but also in East Africa.

But it was for the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mesoamerica that obsidian was most useful. It was used in everyday life: it was found in every household, without social or economic distinction, and it was used for activities such as hunting or agriculture but also in food preparation and other daily activities. . It was also used for sacrificial rituals (self-sacrifices), in art and as a funerary present. For example, anthropomorphic effigies, labrets decorated with gold and turquoise, zoomorphic figurines, vases, beads and mask fragments have been found, as well as obsidian mirrors that would have been used to predict the future.

During Antiquity, obsidian was considered a prestigious stone. In Egypt, at the time of the Pharaohs, it was used for its preciousness and for its beauty. Many black obsidian vases and pots decorated with gold and dating from 1991 to 1293 BC have been found. They also used it a lot to make the eyes of their statues and to make the eyes of Tutankhamun's funerary mask.

Subsequently, obsidian was widely used to make precious ornamental objects such as mirrors, ointment pots, vases or even to make jewelry.
