History & traditions

Sunstone was so named in 1801 by mineralogist Jean-Claude Delamétherie because its sparkle resembled that of the sun.

The only trace of its use in the past is only a hypothesis. Indeed, Thorkild Ramskou, a Danish archaeologist, thought that the sunstone that the Vikings used to orient themselves without a compass when they sailed could be heliolite . Other stones being considered include cordierite and calcite.

Today, sunstone is used in jewelry, cut into cabochons or beads, and in so-called alternative therapies, in the form of raw or polished stone.

There are many synthetic “sunstones” on the market: of a uniform color, darker and dotted with golden flakes.

It is actually a mixture of glitter and dye injected into glass or resin.

Natural sunstone does not have a uniform color and it has lamellar, orange to reddish inclusions of hematite or goethite, which reflect light.

Synthetic sunstones are often sold as goldstone or river of gold .
